Ernie Bushelstack: "Ted Thompson Was a Fine G.M. He Will Get Picked Up By Another Team" Print E-mail
Written by LinkUp Partner
Monday, 01 September 2008
In a surprise move, Ernie Bushlestack of the Appleton based Bushel and a Pack fantasy league cut Ted Thompson from the Green Bay Packers today. The move came on the day Bushelstack took office as "GM for a day" with the Packers. Ernie was last year's winner of the prize given to the top fantasy league commissioner in the state of Wisconsin a prize which included an all expense paid trip to the Packers Hall of Fame, dinner at Curly's Pub, and of course, the coveted "GM for a day" opportunity that every league commissioner in the state covets. The move was Bushelstack's first as commissioner, executed shortly after he took office on Friday, he held a press conference that afternoon.

"Ted Thompson is a fine GM, he will get picked up by another team. We just decided to move in a different direction. " When asked if the move was part of a "youth movement" by the Packers staff, Bushelstack said, "I don't see it that way, I know some do and some of you will report it that way but that's not how I see it. There is a lot of young talent on this team, McCarthy is one of the youngest coaches in the league, Mark Murphy our president, is brand new, and I just turned 19 in March so some will see it that way. I know I am young but I have a lot of experience, remember I played fantasy football for ten years and won six championships including a three-peat from '92-'94 and that's pretty good considering I started when I was nine. This is the hardest part of my job but it's part of my job."

Mr. Bushelstack was then asked if he was comfortable with his decision and at that point in the press conference, he started to open up a bit. "First of all, you can call me E-Stack, that's my fantasy handle and I've had it put on all my letterhead, I'm not used to all the formalities. But to answer your question, No. I'm not comfortable with it, it's the worst part of the job like I said. I'm not an evil person but business is business. It's never easy letting go of a guy who has taken teams to the Super Bowl and here we had a chance at the NFC Championship last year but the Packers are not about getting to Super Bowls, we are not about getting to NFC Championships, we're about winning them."

In response to questions about the future makeup of the team, E-Stack said to look for more free agent acquisitions to fill some of the holes.

"Well, I don't want to tip my hand, and of course we'll keep an eye on how things go this season but there may be some changes. We're looking into the legal possiblities of renegging on the Favre trade but if we can't get him back, we'll probably look at a Tom Brady. Of course, Double D and Greg Jennings are keepers but we might be able to package a deal with the Pats to bring in Randy Moss. One thing I want to take a look at is our offensive line. Our best guys aren't getting any younger and our young guys aren't getting any better so if nothing changes we might try to get the Cowboys offensive line instead.  Speaking of that, I am a real A.J. Hawk supporter but the 'Boys have got a pretty good D unit too. We might go with them and watch Adam "I don't care what you say I'm gonna call ya Pacman" Jones eat up the football in our backfield. The sky is the limit really and there are some other what we call "sleepers" out there that I think might surprise some people so we'll see. That is the benefit of coming from a fantasy background...I have no loyalty to anything or anyone, I only care about winning. This kind of cold detachment is something Ted just couldn't get. He's too soft, too personal and that's no dig, that guy would make a great marriage counselor. He's all open and emotional...that's empathy baby!"

The session concluded with a question about E-Stack's own ability to be the real General Manager of an NFL franchise after only playing fantasy with the suggestion that he might look elsewhere to find a replacement for Thompson. The new GM said only, "We like the guys we've got."

Aaron Rodgers denies feeling pressure: bursts into flames Print E-mail

GREEN BAY

Fire and Rescue was needed at 1265 Lombardi Avenue in Green Bay to put out Green
Bay Packers first year starter Aaron Rodgers after he suddenly and spontaneously burst into flames during an interview. Rodgers had been once again pressed with questions about the amount of pressure he must be under as backup for future Hall of Famer Brett Favre. The first year starter again denied that he was feeling any undue pressure, then promptly burst into flames and began to melt.

Michelle Boscoe, reporter for the Green Bay Times, was at the scene.

"He just said 'I'm focused on football, it doesn't matter that I'm starting for the first time.' Then his eyes kind of glazed over and he said, 'The first time...all alone' then whoosh! It's a good thing rescue was right there or they never would have saved him. I can tell you this, I'll be painting on my eyebrows for awhile."

Rodgers was promptly flown to the burn unit at Mayo Medical in Rochester MN where he is said to be in stable condition. Dr. Abraham Plussinger, the attending physician, said that the burns were mostly superficial and Rodgers should be available for the start of the regular season.

Mike McCarthy, Packers head coach refused to comment on a timeframe for Rodgers' return saying only "It's just another thing for Aaron to overcome...I have 100% confidence in him that he will." When asked if the Packers would put in Brian Brohm in light of these new circumstances, McCarthy just said, "We've moved on...Aaron is our starter."

Ted Thompson Celebrates Favre's return by Minting Limited Edition "Welcome Back Brett" Coins Print E-mail

Mark Murphy today announced that the Packers will be minting a limited edition "Welcome Back Brett" coin to celebrate the reinstatement of the 3 time league MVP.

"While I am the one to give the announcement," Murphy said, "I have to give credit where credit is due. This is really Ted Thompson's idea. He said the idea came to him while we were jumping up and down and giving high fives to each other upon word that Brett's plane had touched down in Green Bay. Ted turns to me and says through tears of joy, 'I have the perfect way to celebrate this blessed event.' So we sat down right there and Ted scratched out a rough draft on napkins. It took a while because he kept shaking his head and staring and saying 'I just can't believe it..I just can't believe it' and he used several of the napkins to blow his nose. Eventually though he had poured out what was in his mind....and I daresay, his heart, on paper. Today we are pleased to unveil the Four Franc Favre."

Murphy said the gold plated coin would be packaged in a commemorative book with a list of all of Brett Favre's current NFL records. "The Favre Franc will be available at Shopko, K-Mart and other fine retail venues in and around Green Bay."

When asked where the proceeds would go, Murphy responded, "All proceeds will go to offset the cost of Favre returning to our team after going back on his initial retirement decision. It will be used for the many offseason acquisitions we made and didn't make to ensure that this team would be competitive without Favre.

Ted Thompson: "You Can Never Have Too Many Good Players, Unless One of Those Players is Brett Favre Print E-mail
Written by LinkUp Partner
Sunday, 03 August 2008

Green Bay - Ted Thompson addressed the media today in a press conference about the team's focus for the 2008 season. When asked about the injuries on the defensive line, Thompson would not rule out the possibility of a trade to bring in more depth.
"If we have to, we'll bring in somebody. You can never have too many good players...unless of course that player is Brett Favre."
Thompson was then asked if he did not believe in stockpiling at the quarterback position. "It's not so much the quarterback position, it's just a basic philosophy that we have here, good players, plenty of competition, and no Favre. That's been my focus since I got here, have the best players who aren't named Favre square off in open competition against each other...we feel that's the best way to build a football team."img src=images/articles/favre0531.jpg""
Thompson was asked if Aaron Rodgers could be pushed and made a better quarterback by having a Hall of Fame caliber quarterback around him.
"Aaron has plenty of non-Favre competition in camp, Brian Brohm is currently growing a five o'clock shadow and brushing up on his country music. I think he is going to be a good player. And Matt Flynn already has an accent so we think that is plenty of push for a California guy to handle...we have 100% faith in Aaron as the future of our Favre-less franchise."
Thompson further commented on the teams willingness to pay Brett Favre to stay off the field. "To build the kind of team we want, to move on...it's going to cost money. I know some people think of me as cheap but I really don't think 20 or 25 million dollars is too much to pay to keep the wrong player off the team."
