Well, the cheering was short-lived. Apparently, much of the Packers' success last week against the Bengals was related to the fact that the Bengals have a weak defensive unit.
Against the Niners, the Green Bay Packers had a much bigger challenge to overcome and they showed they were not up to the challenge. At least they're not up to the challenge yet. San Francisco came into this game ranking... fifth in defense after the first game of the pre-season. We knew that the 49ers would give the Packers a much better challenge than they got against the Bengals, but I expected them to play much better than that. Aaron Rodgers was 9 for 16 for the night. On the surface that seems pretty comparable to his 9 for 15 showing in the first preseason game. In that game he was a pretty consistent force on the field, so he must have been so in this one too, right? Wrong. Against the Bengals Aaron's average yards per pass was a respectable 7.8 yards per pass. Last night... 3.6. No matter who you're up against, that's just not going to get the job done. Heck, our running backs should be showing numbers like that, not our passing game! In fact our running game outdistanced our passing game. We averaged 4.4 yards rushing. Admittedly, there were some pretty big drops. Even Donald Driver dropped a pass he should have caught. I had high hopes that the offensive line would start to click better by now. That was not the case. Now, in the line's defense, the quarterbacks held the ball way too long. Which is amazing in light of the fact that, after holding the ball so long, A-Rod and the boys couldn't find open receivers to throw it to any farther than 4 yards downfield. Jordy Nelson's returns were a nice highlight in an otherwise disappointing game. Jordy showed the coaching staff his ability to contribute to this team in a variety of ways. Not that we didn't know that when we drafted him, but it's nice that he put some action behind that assumption. All in all, this team has a long way to go and not a lot of time to turn things around. Next up, we're on the road to Denver. |
